Changing Landscape

Long time since I’ve taken any kind of landscape; these were  quick shots, late afternoon at my niece’s home on Sturgeon Lake.  Three shots later I was running for the shelter of my car to escape the down-pour.

Only minutes earlier, this was the scene; what a difference clouds make…

August 9, 2010 - 12:56 pm Christina, Sweden - It is amazing how the same spot can be so different in different lightning. I posted a landscape for the shadowtheme in a similar way

August 4, 2010 - 7:15 pm PatB - Julie, thanks for the feedback - hope you are enjoying your summer away. I am the worst at distance so I too just focus at 1/3 into the frame; I use one of the view-finder's lower focus points as a general guide, it's pretty close to 1/3 of the frame. I also use f/16 for landscapes rather than f/22 with my smaller camera sensor; have never tested it for myself but f/22 on anything other than a full-frame sensor is supposed to reduce sharpness.

August 4, 2010 - 4:52 pm Julie McLeod - I love the light on the lake in the closer shot but the composition in the wide angle is most appealing. Pat, in landscape shooting, how (and where) do you set your focus point? I'm never sure if the technique of focusing 1/3 of the way into the frame is the best approach....

July 30, 2010 - 9:03 pm mike - Love the top one, lighting is everything!

July 28, 2010 - 8:30 pm Ellen - Amazing how the light can change so quickly, the wide shot is especially beautiful.

July 28, 2010 - 6:15 pm Kristy - I agree with Ron- like the first one best. Both are lovely landscapes, though!

July 27, 2010 - 2:33 am PatB - Thanks for the helpful comment Ron... you're absolutely right about needing to step back from the second one. My subject iniitially was the tree so I went for a tighter shot, until I noticed the clouds and the quickly changing light. I switched then to the 10-22mm lens to concentrate on the clouds. I like the wider angle as well and together they don't work. You helped me figure out what was bugging me about this post. Interesting huh!

July 27, 2010 - 2:06 am Ron a.k.a. Danudin - Oh I truly like the first one best Pat! It seems finished and perfect, the other invites you to step back. Wonderful shots.
