General Hospital Demolition ~ Part I (Reposted from June 21, 2011)

The Sioux Lookout General Hospital means many things to many people.  I was born here, my children were born here, my grandchildren were born here.  I also worked here for many years until my retirement.  We have a nice shiny new hospital to serve the community now, but it will never take on the true meaning of caring and community that this one did.  It is very sad to watch it disappear over the last few days…

The Hospital was mostly gone by yesterday afternoon (Monday, June 20th).  The view is from Wellington Street; what remains by later afternoon is a small section of the Front Entrance on the left and behind that, the Maternity Ward.

Taking you back to Saturday, June 18th.  It actually appeared pretty quiet as you approached the front of the building.  Demolition began on the South and West sides, working inward to the heart of the building.

The main activity Saturday was in the back of the Hospital.

What’s left of the Emergency Entrance.

The scene Sunday June 19th will follow in Part II… that day felt the most devastating.
